Flood: Bukoy sympathises with victims, seeks FG’s intervention

The Deputy Chairman, House Committee on Water Resources, Hon. Olubukola Oyewo has appealed to the Federal Government to assist the state in combating flood disaster.

He made the appeal, today, in response to the flood disaster that affected some areas in Osogbo, Olorunda, Irepodun and Orolu Local Governments.

Some houses and shops in Osogbo, Ilobu and Ifon-Osun were ravaged by flood following the downpour that ran through last week till date.

He described the challenge of flooding as enormous, saying the Federal Government’s support is needed in finding a lasting solution to the disaster.

The lawmaker commended the Governor's prompt response and effort of the state government towards putting a stop to the disaster in various parts of the state by bringing dredging machines to clear the flooded sites and create necessary expansion to allow for free flow of water in the affected areas. He urged the government to extend the effort to other parts of Osogbo Federal Constituency.

The Orolu-born politician further disclosed that the state government had earlier requested for support from the Federal Government through the office of the Secretary to the Government of Federation, Boss Mustapha, adding that the Federal Government had promised to support the state in that regard.

He warned the residents against dumping of refuse in the canals and rivers, and added that the act was partly responsible for flooding since the blockage arising from the bad habit will prevent water from flowing freely to the appropriate destination.

While assuring the victims that he will do the needful to further attract federal government intervention in order to complement the efforts of the state government, the lawmaker said the environmental task force, as promised by the State Governor, Gboyega Oyetola would be deployed to prevent residents from dumping their refuse in the canals and rivers.

Meanwhile, residents are now counting their losses as incessant rainfall which led to an upsurge of rivers, displaced them and also destroyed property worth millions of naira.

While sympathising with the affected residents, he urged them to stay away temporarily from the flood-prone areas.

Xenophobia: House of Rep Member, Bukoy Condemns attack on Nigerians in SA, Caution against Reprisal Attacks

The Deputy Chairman, House Committee on Water Resources, Hon. Olubukola Oyewo has condemned the attacks on Nigerians and other Africans in South Africa.

Oyewo who spoke through his Media Office in Osogbo said the growing xenophobic attacks on innocent and law-abiding Nigerians in some parts of the Republic of South Africa in the past few weeks have become one too many in recent years and, therefore, stand condemnable by all men and countries of goodwill.

He said "the United Nations Charter on Peoples Rights and African Union’s Conventions and Protocols, to which both Nigeria and the Republic of South Africa are signatory, allow for free movement of persons, goods and services. It is therefore, bewildering and unsettling that it is fast becoming a pastime of some nations of the world, for every flimsy reason, to treat Nigerians resident in their countries as objects of disdain and torture .This has got to stop.

“I, therefore, call on our leaders, especially, members of the Executive, to join hands with the Parliament and engage the leadership of the Republic of South Africa, especially, President Cyril Ramophosa and the South African Parliament, towards finding a definite and lasting solution to the ongoing act of insanity in that country against Nigerians over there.

“On our part as Members of the House of Representatives, we are already monitoring closely situations in the Republic of South Africa beyond what is being put out in the social media. We are also reaching out to Nigerian authorities and our leaders across the globe in order to see what could be done to effectively manage the ongoing carnage against our people. We use this opportunity to also appeal for calm among our people, who, understandably, may be highly agitated by the gravity of the attacks,” he added.
