World Environment Day: Oyewo Advocates Strong Legislation on Environment, Cautions Against Indiscriminate Refuse Dumping

The Deputy Chairman, House of Representatives' Committee on Water Resources, Hon. Olubukola Oyewo has advocated strong legislations to protect the environment in Nigeria.

Oyewo stated this during the celebration of World Environment Day and global environmental issues.

He urged, "we must be proactive in stopping indiscriminate dumping of waste products. This constitutes a major challenge which triggers avoidable threats to lives."

The lawmaker attributed  floodings in some parts of the country to the indiscriminate d
umping of waste, leading to blockage of water channels.

Oyewo noted that unless strong legislations are enacted and enforced, mankind will continue to live under environmental threats.

He also called on the industrialised nations of the world to reduce gas emissions into the atmosphere which has continued to deplete the ozone layer, causing unexplained ailments and deaths globally.

The member of the Green Chamber called for tree planting as one of the solutions to mitigate desertification and erosion to pacify environmental insults done to nature.
